Inside Tips on Capturing Emotive Portraits

Taking portraits is something we love to do – and regardless of what kind of photographer you are, being able to take beautiful portraits is a priceless skill to have. Once you have mastered the basic techniques of taking flattering portraits of your model, the next step is to start becoming creative and having fun playing with different types of emotions in portraits.

Whether it’s laughter, happiness or thoughtfulness, etc that you want to be able to express through your portraits, we have some great tips to help you learn how to capture some amazing emotive portraits.

Choose The Right Setting

The best way to start capturing emotive portraits is to choose the right setting/location to help create the right type of feeling in the portrait.

So for example, if you are wanting to capture carefree portraits, you would naturally choose an open space setting  to help express it.

Or if you are trying to capture a happy, joyful portrait, then using light and airy colours for your backdrop will help portray that emotion easier.

You might not know straight away what the right environment is for the type of portrait you have in mind, so try to have a clear picture of what you want it to look like until you find something to suit the mood.

The Art Of Portraying Emotion

Whether you are taking self-portraits or photographing models, learning how to look good in front of the camera or knowing how to direct your model to make them look beautiful, whilst also getting them to portray a certain emotion, other than smiling at the camera…. is quite tricky if you don’t have the necessary skill-set to know how to model, or how to direct your model.
